Over a quarter century of Jamie

Here's Jamie at two weeks.

Here's how not to hold a baby. Actually, I thought I was doing a good job at the time but I've been told
differently by a number of people who look at this picture. The mittens over her hands were allegedly to
keep her from scratching herself. As it turns out, she hasn't grown up to be a scratcher - but they do a
lot of things differently in the Philippines. This picture was taken within a few days of Christmas.
It never gets very cold in the Philippines.

This was taken after Jamie's christening. The lady holding Jamie was a
good friend of mine. I knew her as Emmy but her real name was Remidios.

This picture was sent to me after I had returned to the states to make my fortune and start petitioning our
government for a couple of visas. I don't know who is holding her. I've asked Jamie but she wont tell me.

Here she is smiling for the camera.

By the time Jamie celebrated her first birthday, the visa paperwork was wending its way through the
bureaucracy and I was a fixture in the military industrial complex, helping to build Trident missiles at
Lockheed Missiles and Space. I would have been content to build space.

Jamie and her mother arrived at SFO on Easter, 1980. At 16 months,
her English wasn't that good but by the time I gave her this stuffed
animal a few months later she was able to pronounce Snuffleupagus.

When kids are little you have to plan ahead when you make clothing purchases. It was a while before Jamie
grew into this jacket but it served its purpose. This is one of my favorite pictures.

Somewhere along the line this print got cut into a cameo shape, and I'm too lazy to try to find the negative.

Here she is cultivating those crucial "talking on the phone" skills.

I must have gotten her this chair in hopes that she'd grow up to be a rocker like her old man...

I know what you're thinking: how could any responsible parent let a little kid have a
Budweiser? First of all, who said I was responsible? And second, they didn't have
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale back then.

I'm not sure when this was taken but you can tell that Jamie's mom was still around
by the fact that there is a plant - and it's not brown. This would be the first of
many sets of coveralls that would adorn Jamie's wardrobe.

The first Christmas in San Jose. I still remember assembling that bicycle while Jamie was asleep.

I remember this party. It was in 1984 and it was in July. I'm guessing it was July 4th.
That's Jamie, her grandmother's friend Cheryl, Cheryl's daughter Amber,
and Jamie's grandmother (a.k.a. my mother).

Jamie & Irene: 1981 - 1987

Here's Jamie (in red) celebrating Easter with her cousin Irene. I can't remember if this was
1981 or 1982 so I'm not sure if this was her first Easter Egg hunt or her second, but clearly
Irene was a seasoned veteran. Maybe it was because Jamie wasn't quite awake yet, but the
first couple eggs were found by Irene.

It didn't take too long for Jamie to get in the spirit though...

then the game was on in earnest.

Of course, no child gets that excited about hard-boiled eggs until you hide them,

then they can't get enough of them.

Once they had eaten a healthy breakfast of eggs, what better way to top it off than with a bunch of chocolate?

I think this is Jamie's 3rd birthday.

It looks like Irene is helping to blow out the candles, of which there appear to be 3,
plus a large numeral for educational purposes...

It looks like Irene and Jamie have started to celebrate without the grown-ups.

Jamie and Irene spending the night somewhere. The date on the back says November, 1984.

The elementary school years

This is my favorite school picture of Jamie's. I think it was her kindergarten
picture but it may have been from her preschool...

It gets a little confusing because Jamie bounced around a few schools after her mother moved out.

This may have been her kindergarten picture or it may have been 1st grade...

After her mother moved out I moved Jamie into a Montessori school. I think this
is her 1st grade picture from there.

It looks like she's choking back tears here,
but I seem to recall she was trying not to laugh - and failing miserably...

2nd grade school picture.

3rd grade school picture.

4th grade school picture.

5th grade school picture.

This is from a Christmas tree decoration that Jamie made in school. The 6th grade, I think.

Jamie unwrapping the tapes that went with the camcorder that I got her for Christmas in 1987.
It was a pretty low-tech camcorder but apparently they're all the rage now for that retro look.
She really wishes she knew what became of that. Not to mention that original GI Joe that I gave her.
Who knew that those would be worth something someday...

Jamie's 10th birthday at Chucky Cheese.

Make a wish.

I love this picture.

It looks like she was having a good time.

I have a good time whenever I look at these pictures.

Pour a little drink for her friend...

a little drink for herself...

and cheers!

Oh yeah - cheers, dad.

And now for the moment she's been waiting for...

Daisy looks on as Jamie gasps incredulously.

Yo Yo Yo...

Oooh, and a cheap imitation Walkman!

Now it's time to go play some games.

Road-trip: 1990

Jamie at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in the summer of 1990. This was the first
time either of us had been to the southwest, or driven cross-country.

Jamie at Carlsbad Cavern in the summer of 1990.

Jamie and me at my cousin Mark's place in Bloomington, Indiana. She and I drove out
there in the summer of 1990 ostensibly to attend the 50th anniversary of Mark's
parents. Behind Jamie and to the right is Mark's daughter Ruth who has since married,
and moved to Texas. Behind Jamie and to the left is Mark's daughter Rachel, who has
since married, and moved to New Mexico. To the right of Mark is his late wife, Dorothy.

The middle school years

All grown up

Jamie on my birthday in 1996. This was when she was going through her Dennis Rodman phase.
I had to sit on her lap just so she'd stay put long enough to take a picture.

Easter 1999: Irene and Jamie out on the balcony of my old apartment.

Jamie joined Daisy and me for Thanksgiving right after we moved into our flat
in San Francisco. In honor of the occasion she wore her best coveralls...

Here's Jamie with her boyfriend Chris, and Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Chris is the one on the right.

Here's Jamie with Chris again, getting ready to attend the Barrister's Ball.
Apparently, Jamie couldn't find her coveralls...

Here's Jamie receiving her second degree. This one from the McGeorge School of Law.
Under the gown? Coveralls.
